Blown glass and dormant mycelium, 4.5" x 4.5"x 1.75"

Kelly M O'Brien’s sculpture practice is rooted in the exploration of nature, resilience, and renewal. She works with plant-based bio-ingredients for casting and fabrication, which are non-toxic and biodegradable, reflecting a commitment to sustainable art.

O'Brien's current body of work, 'A Spell Against Despair,' delves into the ecological and structural dynamics of woodlands, using them as a metaphor for protection, connection, and regeneration. Her practice aims to stir empathy and curiosity about the natural world, encouraging a deeper consideration of our relationship with it.

This donated piece is part of a collection of small objects that explore the materiality and form of live and dormant mycelium (fungi roots), referencing the interconnectivity of ecosystems.

Kelly recently relocated to the Hudson Valley after 12 years overseas. Her work has been exhibited in the UK, Europe, and US. She received the Royal Society of Sculptors Gilbert Bayes Award in 2023 and residencies at Byrdcliffe Woodstock (2023), PADA Lisbon (2022), and Bath Spa University (2021-2022).

Her recent grants and commissions include support from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, Arts Council England, and Somerset Art Works. Kelly co-founded the community art nonprofit Bath Art Depot and co-curates A Gathering of Unasked Possibility, a trans-Atlantic project fostering creative collaboration. She is an artist educator at Dia Beacon and a member of the BAU Gallery collective in Beacon, NY.

In addition to her studio practice, O'Brien actively engages with the public through programming that promotes conversations around care, repair, and sustainability. Her aim is to create spaces that invite reflection and inspire a deeper, more meaningful connection with the more-than-human world.
